Serbia seeks grave of slain WWII guerrilla leader

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbia’s government has formed a special commission to try to locate the grave of a World War II guerrilla leader executed as a traitor by the Communists, officials said Monday.

The location of Dragoljub Draza Mihailovic’s grave has been unknown since postwar Communist authorities executed him in 1946 for collaboration with the Nazi occupiers.

For decades, the issue has fueled divisions in Serbia, where many believe that Mihailovic was a hero who was killed for his loyalty to the Karadjordjevic royal family which ruled the country before the war.

Mihailovic is particularly respected among Serbs in America, most of whom had fled Communism. A Chicago-based Serb group recently offered a $100,000 (€75,500) reward for help finding the grave.

In Serbia, Slobodan Radovanovic, the state prosecutor who heads the government commission, urged the opening of secret state security files on the case. He also said the people who were involved in the Mihailovic execution should be called to testify about the location of his body.

Senior Justice Ministry official Slobodan Homen said, “Our only goal is to clarify this historic mystery.” He said the commission will not make any judgments about Mihailovic’s role in the war.

Mihailovic, a Yugoslav officer, launched a resistance movement in 1941 against the German occupiers. But he also fought against Communist guerrillas later in the war, and non-Serbs have accused his troops of atrocities.

The Communist authorities jailed Mihailovic after the war and sentenced him to death in a hasty trial.

In 1948, U.S. President Harry Truman posthumously awarded Mihailovic the Legion of Merit award for his role in rescuing hundreds of U.S. airmen downed by the Nazis over Serbia.

Serb Leaders send plea to French President to save General Mihailovich's life

To Monsieur Charles Bidault
President of France:

"The Execution of General Mihailovich will be a terrible shock to all the enslaved peoples of Europe and a definite proof to all the world that Great Britain, France and the United States have lost the moral right to speak on behalf of freedom and democracy in the world. One hundred thousand American citizens of Serbian descent appeal to your excellency to intervene and prevent the execution of your country's loyal ally, now condemned to death in Tito's court."

Rt. Rev. Bishop Dionisiye
Serbian Orthodox Diocese of America and Canada

Louis C. Christopher
National President, Serb National Federation

Mitchell M. Duchich
President, Serbian National Defense Council of America

[Aleksandra's note: Exact date of telegram is not indicated, however, since the plea refers to Mihailovich already having been sentenced in Tito's court, the date is circa July 1946.]

Dražin grob pod ružama ?

D. Vlahović - N. Božović
Politika Online
April 18, 2009

Serbian Patriarch Pavle issues Orthodox Easter Message April 2009

BELGRADE -- The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, has made public this year's Easter proclamation...

"Today, millions of spiritually impoverished and morally devastated people, swayed by the glitter of transient things, live in this world as they would in a cold grave," says the message, read in Belgrade on Saturday by Metropolitan Amfilohije.

"Is the world not turning into a factory and market of fake glitter and short-lived values? Is it not often said today that man can walk this earth in peace even without the heavens?," the message further asks.

The patriarch urged the civilization to remember the words of Christ, "Without me, you can do nothing".

"We pray to the risen Lord to resurrect the human image of man's original nature in us as well, which is nowadays so often distorted, masked and mutilated by numerous vices and shortcomings. For everyone to recognize humans in us, in the glow of His eternal life, rich or poor, whether or not holding a position of importance."

The Easter message also appeals on "brothers and sisters to keep dignity and faith in the risen Lord, love for their neighbors, truth and justice, and in all the good that people wish, but cannot reach without the help of the risen Lord."

The message came with a special dedication to the Orthodox Serbs in Kosovo, as well as to all the places around the world where Orthodox Serbs are due to celebrate Easter on Sunday.

Politika

April 17, 2009

Hapšenje Draže ključ tajne

BLIC Online

Prepiska Krcuna i Rankovića o hapšenju Mihailovića

Navy Veteran and Halyard Mission Survivor Arthur Jibilian tells his story

By MaryAnn Kromer

Advertiser-Tribune.com

April 7, 2009

Navy veteran Arthur Jibilian lived in Tiffin and worked at Basic for 28 years. Now a resident of Fremont, Jibilian spoke of his harrowing experiences in the European Theater of World War II.

Last month Jibilian addressed the Midday Fellowship at St. John United Church of Christ in Tiffin.

Accompanying Jibilian were his wife, Jo, his daughter, Deborah Jibilian, and Capt. Gary Bentley of the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing. Jibilian gave some background information about himself and the situation in Europe at the time he served in the military.

"In January 1942, I planned to go into the Naval Air Corps ... but they told me to come back later," Jibilian said.

About that time, his father became ill, so Jibilian cared for him until he died. In 1943, at age 20, Jibilian was drafted and accepted into the Navy. When his superiors discovered he could speak Armenian, they decided to make him a radio operator. He went to Ft. Benning, Ga., for parachute training and army maneuvers. Intelligence training took another two months.

In the fall of 1944, Jibilian was involved in a secret operation to rescue U.S. airmen who had been shot down during bombing runs on oil fields in Romania and stranded in Yugoslavia behind enemy lines. Because of its classified status, the mission that saved more than 500 men could not be revealed. The story of Operation Halyard finally was told in "The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II." The book by Gregory A. Freeman was published in 2007.

"When World War II broke out, Germany invaded Yugoslavia," he said. "The oil fields (in Ploesti, Romania) were prime targets of the Allies."

American pilots were assigned to fly out of Italy to bomb the German-held oil fields in an effort to cut off fuel supplies for the Nazis. Jibilian said each plane carried 10 men, and about a third of the aircraft were shot down. Those who were able to parachute out of the falling planes were in danger of being killed or taken prisoner.

The Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, wanted to bring back the men on the ground in the Yugoslavian countryside.

The American military discovered an unlikely ally in General Draza Mihailovich. He was the leader of a Serbian resistance movement that wanted the Germans out of their country.

"General Mihailovich put out a decree to protect (the Americans) at all costs," Jibilian said.

As a result, the Serbian peasants, who were dealing with many hardships of their own, risked their lives to hide the American men until a rescue could be organized. The British wanted the U.S. to stay out of Yugoslavia and would not permit flights from British-controlled air strips. Jibilian volunteered to parachute behind enemy lines to set up radio communication.

The OSS organized a team and worked with Mihailovich to formulate the secret rescue plan. The evacuation had to be done in daylight because of the rugged terrain. Directed by the American intelligence, the Serbians used oxcarts to build an air strip surrounded by woods, working mostly at night.

Other team members coordinated the movement of all the airmen to the landing strip. American C-4 cargo planes with fighter escorts were to fly in and load up as many airmen as possible. What began as a 10-day mission turned into six months. In all, 513 U.S. airmen and a few from other Allied countries, were airlifted to safety with no casualties or losses.

Ironically, Mihailovich, who had made the rescue possible, did not fare so well. He had turned down a safe exit from Yugoslavia so that he could stay with his people and continue to sabotage the Germans. A new leader, General Tito, came to power and gained the support of the Allies. Tito captured Mihailovich and put him on trial. In spite of Mihailovich's life-saving efforts, the U.S. did not defend him.

Jibilian was among a group of 20 airmen who went to Washington to stand up for Mihailovich and clear his name. Ignoring their efforts, the Yugoslavians declared the matter was an "internal affair" and executed the man who had facilitated the survival of hundreds of American military.

"Flash forward now 60 years. In 2004, I got an invitation to go back to Serbia and help dedicate the airfield," Jibilian said.

Although the ceremony in 2005 did not get much publicity, Jibilian said the Serbian people lined up to shake his hand and show appreciation. The delegation also was able to present Mihailovich's daughter with the Legion of Merit Medal issued to her father in 1947.

Betty Deason, who had invited Jibilian to speak, asked about a photograph in the book that depicts some of the rescued pilots with cloth sacks over their feet. Jibilian said the men wanted to leave behind their footwear for the use of their benefactors. Deason recommended the book to those who had not read it.

After Jibilian's presentation, his daughter, Deborah Jibilian, spoke about other events her father has attended. In 2008, the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 582 at Metcalf Field learned about her father's role in the rescue of pilots in 1944. The EAA and the 180th Fighter Wing teamed up to recognize Jibilian on Flag Day, June 14.

"They had a fly-in last June to honor Dad. ... They had a whole day of festivities. They brought in B-17s. It was wonderful," Deborah said.

The EAA also invited Jibilian to the annual fly-in at their headquarters in Oshkosh, Wis., this August. When the honoree questioned all the attention he was receiving, the airmen said pilots are a brotherhood that recognizes anyone who helps one of their own. Deborah said Ohio politicians and the 180th also honored her father Dec. 7, 2008, when Jibilian received a Congressional award.

"It was the first time the U.S. Government had acknowledged Mihailovich. This was phenomenal for Dad. In January, we were so honored that the 180th did cross training with the Serbs. The Serbs come here and train with the 180th, and the 180th goes to Serbia and does training. There were two pilots and two mechanics that were here," Deborah said.

At a dinner with the Serbian Air Force and the 180th, the Jibilians took a copy of Freeman's book and showed the photographs to the Serbian men. In spite of the language barrier, the Serbs were able to understand the young military man in the pictures was the same person who was having dinner with them.

"About two weeks later, the general sent Dad a letter opener sword that all Serbian pilots are given when they get their commission," Deborah said. "Several of the pilots that were rescued that actually have kept in touch with the families that were their benefactors."

Even before "The Forgotten 500" was published, Jibilian was giving talks for school groups, churches and organizations in an effort to narrate the story of Mihailovich's heroism, which was covered up for many years. Deborah said Oliver North interviewed her father more than three years ago, but the interview was never broadcast or printed.

"He's been recorded for the Library of Congress and at the University of Toledo. ... The genealogy department at Toledo is doing a search on all of the rescued guys," Deborah said. "That's part of a nationwide search the university is doing."

100,000 U.S. dollars offered by Serbian National Defense as reward for finding Mihailovich gravesite

Serb group seeks grave of WWII guerrilla leader

AP

March 23, 2009

BELGRADE, Serbia - A Chicago-based Serb group said Monday it is offering a $100,000 reward for anyone who can locate the grave of a World War II guerrilla leader executed as a traitor by the Communists.

The burial site of Dragoljub Draza Mihailovic has been unknown since his execution in 1946 by the postwar Communist authorities. Mihailovic was convicted of collaboration with the Nazi occupiers in a hasty trial orchestrated by the new government.

The Serbian National Defense Council of America posted the reward offer on its Web site. The group said that the reward would be paid only after DNA tests confirm that the remains are those of Mihailovic.

Mihailovic was an officer of the pre-1941 Yugoslav Royal Army. He launched a resistance movement in 1941 against the German occupiers. However, he also fought against Communist guerrillas later in the war, and his troops were accused of atrocities by non-Serbs.

The Allies initially supported Mihailovic and his followers, but later shifted their support to the Communists, who by 1945 had seized power and abolished the monarchy.

In 1948, U.S. President Harry Truman posthumously awarded Mihailovic the Legion of Merit award for his role in rescuing hundreds of U.S. airmen downed by the Nazis over Serbia.

Mihailovic also enjoys respect among America's Serbs, many of whom fled Communism after World War II. Chicago has the biggest Serbian community in the U.S.

In Serbia, Mihailovic's descendants have lodged an official request with the Serbian courts for Mihailovic's legal and political rehabilitation after the fall of Communism.

U Vojnom arhivu Srbije u Ozninom dosijeu ni slova o Dražinoj smrti

Ekskluzivno: „Blic” u Vojnom arhivu Srbije U Ozninom dosijeu ni slova o Dražinoj smrti

Autor: Tanja Nikolić-Đaković 01.04.2009. - 07:52

Ničeg nema osim sudskih spisa i siromašnog personalnog dosijea zavedenog pod brojem K-1034/389. On sadrži osnovne podatke, imena, godine, mesto rođenja, imena roditelja, dece, žene, mesta službovanja, činove, ordenja, nagrade, učešće u ratovima.

A uz nju i izvršenje presude.

“Stas: srednji. Lice: okruglo. Kosa: smeđa. Nos: pravilan. Brkovi: šišani. Usta: pravilna. Brada: brije. Osobeni znaci: nema. Vera: istočno pravoslavna. Narodnost: Jugosloven”. *datum: 06. 09. 1935. U dosijeu nema ni podataka o praćenju, doušnicima, niti ma o čemu drugom.

Tito's Rule Worse Than Hitler's in Yugoslavia

"In the eight months I spent in Yugoslavia with the Partisans, I never once saw them fight the Germans. I heard a continual stream of anti-capitalist propaganda and saw incessant fighting by the Partisans against the Yugoslav peasants to force them to accept Communism."

Joseph Veselinovich,

to the Partisans in Yugoslavia

TITO'S RULE WORSE THAN HITLER'S, VETERAN SAYS

Globe Democrat

St. Louis, Missouri

1946

A “reign of terror’ and anti-American propaganda in Yugoslavia under Marshal Tito has caused more suffering to the Yugoslavians under the Communists than the Nazis inflicted, Joseph Veselinovich, former American officer who went on three secret missions to the partisans in Yugoslavia, told the Globe-Democrat yesterday.

Discharged four months ago after four years in the Army, Veselinovich first parachuted into Yugoslavia in May, 1944, to establish contact with the partisan troops and organize supply lines for the resistance movement. With the aid of 200 partisan women, the St. Louisan succeeded in building an airport in the mountains near the Hungarian border, only six miles from German lines, for United States planes to fly supplies to Tito’s men and carry out the wounded.

“In the eight months I spent in Yugoslavia with the Partisans, I never once saw them fight the Germans,” Veselinovich said. “I heard a continual stream of anti-capitalist propaganda and saw incessant fight by the Partisans against the Yugoslav peasants to force them to accept Communism.

A native of Yugoslavia who came to St. Louis in 1929, Veselinovich said that Tito’s forces destroyed whole villages of loyal Yugoslavians because they had refused to join the communist movement. He stated that more than 100,000 Yugoslav men, women and children fled to Italy immediately after the German surrender to escape the communists and cannot return to their homes for fear of Tito’s “purge.”

“While I was in the hills with the Partisans,” he said, “I heard the commissars report regularly on strikes in this country, race riots, and predict the fall of American capitalism. They never once mentioned lend-lease aid to Russia and Yugoslavia.”

“More propaganda was distributed against the Chetniks than against the Nazis,” he reported. “Rumors of Chetnik collaboration with the Germans were spread, but not a single one was proved.”

Tito refused to allow UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) to distribute food and supplies to the liberated people as it did in other countries because he wanted to handle the relief material himself to use it as a political weapon, the St. Louisan declared. As a result, many hungry persons were denied aid.
