International Holocaust Day and Exhibition
“JASENOVAC - THE RIGHT TO REMEMBRANCE”
January 27, 2017 [and beyond].

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Jasenovac, a series of commemorative events will be held in New York, from 27-30 January 2017. On the Holocaust Day, camp inmates and members of the delegation from Serbia will attend the main ceremony to be held in the United Nations, in the morning hours. On the same day, St. Sava Day, 27 January, an exhibition will be opened, announced as the biggest exhibition on Jasenovac ever displayed in a foreign country. The event in New York will be attended by a Serbian 23 member delegation, headed by Vladimir Bozovic, Advisor to the Serbian Prime Minister, including members Ivan Kostic, President of the Serbian National Assembly Committee for the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, other camp survivor inmates, 15 scientific researchers, two UNICEF ambassadors and artists.

Exhibition "The Truth about Jasenovac – the Right to Rememberance", where 800 kilograms of material will be displayed, including: 180 billboards containing texts of the International Expert Group of Historians, 25 sculptures by sculptors Ljubisa Mancic and Katarina Tripkovic, and 21 drawings by artist Dragan Jelovac, a photo wall by Vukica Mikaca, authentic objects from the Donja Gradina Memorial Centre, books, screening of films: "And Gods Remained Silent" and "Saul's Son", was organized by Israeli Holocaust Institute, and New York Jasenovac Research Institute, with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Israel. The exhibits will include materials from the archives of Israel, Germany, USA, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Republic of Srpska and Croatia. The Director of the International Expert Group of Historians, which prepared 180 billboards for the exhibition, is Prof. Dr. Gideon Greif, a leading Holocaust historian, Expert on Auschwitz at the Holocaust – Shem Olam Institute in Israel. The Exhibition's Art Director is Prof. Emir Kusturica, UNICEF Ambassador, Director of the Andric Institute and signatory of the Memorandum on Cooperation between Serbian and Jewish Academic Communities and Diasporas. Promoters of the "Jasenovac Remembrance" campaign are historians from seven countries and public personalities including Belgrade Opera primadonna and Member of Parliament Jadranka Jovanovic, UNICEF Ambassador Ana Sofrenovic and Vjera Mujovic Preis.

On Saturday, 28 January, a scientific conference "History Workshop – Jasenovac Magnum Crimen" will be opened and addressed by Chairman Prof. Dr. Gideon Greif; co-chaired by: Emir Kusturica, film director and UNICEF Ambassador; Barry Lituchy, history professor at Medgar Evers College in New York and founder of the New York Jasenovac Research Institute; Knut Fluvik Thoresen, an Oslo historian and researcher of the "Simon Wiesenthal" Centre in Israel, and Prof. Dr. Dragana Radojicic, Director of the Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA).

The intention to hold commemorative events in New York was communicated to the public in July 2016, at the lecture by Prof. Dr. Gideon Greif held at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade and the Andric Institute in Visegrad. The initial lecture was attended - in addition to representatives of the professional community, by representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Jasenovac Committee of the Serbian Orthodox Church Holy Synod of Bishops.

This was followed by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Andric Institute, Tel Aviv Holocaust Institute, New York Jasenovac Research Institute, Comparative Law Institute, and the SASA Institute of Ethnography, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of FDPM/MFA I. Dacic and H.E. Dr. Alona Fisher Kamm, Ambassador of Israel. One of the joint steps to follow will be organization of a world conference on the Holocaust and genocide in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), to be held in Andricgrad, in April.

On 6 October, a public hearing on the protection of the culture of remembrance of Jasenovac was held at the Serbian National Assembly, for the first time in Serbian Parliament history. The hearing was co-organized by the Migration and Diaspora Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Serbian National Assembly Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region. Historians and fighters against racial discrimination coming from seven countries participated in the event, which was also attended by Secretaries General of the President, and of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Serbian Prime Minister's Advisor, representatives of many camp inmate associations, the diplomatic corps, and Members of Parliament.

The exhibition devoted to genocide and the Holocaust in NDH was realized by New York Jasenovac Research Institute, which has been organizing there, for the last 15 years, annual conferences about this notorious concentration camp. Furthermore, the City of New York is the only foreign city which adopted an official decision that 22 April - the Jasenovac inmate breakthrough day, be declared Jasenovac Remembrance Day, which has been annually observed in New York since 2005. The Holocaust Memorial Park in New York is the only foreign memorial park to include a monument to Jasenovac. The monument was erected by the Serbian diaspora. The main event commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held annually on 27 January, at the United Nations. For this reason, the tribute to Jasenovac victims will be paid in New York, both at the UN Headquarters, and the Holocaust Memorial Park where wreaths will be laid on the monument dedicated to Jasenovac and Auschwitz concentration camps, attended by Serbian and Jewish diaspora.

Vasilije Krestic, academician and President of the Association for Building a Memorial Centre to Serb Victims of Genocide in the 20th Century, has assessed that the exhibition is based on international documents, well-balanced, politically thoughtful, and in line with the foreign policy interests of the Republic of Serbia – the only country charged for genocide twice before the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Academician Krestic believes that foreign sources cited at the exhibition only contribute to the objectivity of the perception of the executors' genocidal intent, further indicating that the exhibition is universal in character, timely, addressing the challenges in the international arena, while contributing to the protection of Serbia's foreign policy interests and cherishing the culture of remembrance of Serbian victims in the NDH.

Zagreb Event [Wed. Jan. 25, 2017] Challenges Concentration Camp Death Toll

The Zagreb [Croatia] authorities have given the go-ahead to a controversial event questioning the official number of victims of the World War II fascist concentration camp at Jasenovac in Croatia.

The Zagreb city administration has given its consent for a public roundtable discussion on Wednesday evening that will discuss “manipulations” of the official number of victims who died at the World War II concentration camp Jasenovac, which was run by fascist Ustasa movement.

The right-wing participants will also question whether Jasenovac was really a concentration camp, or just a labour camp.

The personnel running the hall where it will take place – a venue owned by the city – confirmed to BIRN that the municipal administration has given consent for the discussion entitled ‘Jasenovac - False Myth’, organised by an NGO called the Croatian Club.

The panellists will include right-wing historian Josip Jurcevic, ballistics expert and writer Zdenko Kuftinec, and two members of a highly controversial Croatian far-right NGO called Threefold Jasenovac - historian Stipo Pilic and journalist Igor Vukic.

The NGO claims that the Ustasa ran a labour camp at Jasenovac for enemies of the regime, but it says that the real death camp was run by the Yugoslav Communists, which imprisoned Ustasa members and regular Croatian Home Guard army troops until 1948, then alleged Stalinists until 1951. No documents exist that prove the NGO’s claims.

The vast majority of historians believe however that Jasenovac was a concentration camp for Serbs, Jews, Roma and anti-fascists, and was open between 1941 and 1945.

According to research by the Jasenovac Memorial Site, 83,145 people – 47,627 Serbs, 16,173 Roma, 13,116 Jews and the others anti-fascists – have been identified on a name-by-name basis as having died at the concentration camp during the war, a figure which is not yet final.

Jurcevic told BIRN that Wednesday’s event was “a small attempt to tackle all the manipulations regarding the Jasenovac camp”.

“People who are researchers of Jasenovac will speak here… The goal of the roundtable is to publicly, as much as is possible, present the facts on the issue in order to demythologise and depoliticise this topic,” he said.

Jurcevic claimed that the number of people who died at Jasenovac has been exaggerated for political purposes and “isn’t supported by scientific facts”.

The Jasenovac Memorial Site however compiles its list of victims from at least two verified independent sources, such as documents and relatives of those who died.

Vukic said meanwhile that he will speak about an international delegation – made up of representatives of other Nazi-aligned states as well as the Holy See – which visited the camp in February 1942 and, he claimed, described conditions at the camp in a way that “opposes the claims promoted by the official historiography”.

“They actually confirm what former President [Stjepan] Mesic said in a video published the other day. He actually didn’t say anything wrong or bad,” Vukic added.

Two videos of Mesic, both recorded in 1992, in which he questioned the death toll at Jasenovac and whether it was actually a concetration camp, were made public on Monday by far-right news site Maxportal and local TV show Bujica.

Mesic said on Tuesday however that he had made “unsubstantiated allegations” in the videos and explained that he had changed his views since the footage was filmed 25 years ago.

“In the circumstances of the political environment [in 1992] in which I actively participated… and under the influence of inaccurate information that I received, there was this reckless statement,” admitted Mesic, who was Croatia’s president between 2000 and 2010.

“If I offended someone with my reckless statement, I hereby apologise,” he added.

Croatian Jews to boycott Holocaust remembrance event over 'relativization' of crimes / "Reuters" Jan. 23, 2017

Croatian Jews to boycott Holocaust remembrance event over 'relativization' of crimes

Croatian Jews said on Monday they would boycott the country's main Holocaust remembrance event this week, accusing the authorities of playing down crimes perpetrated under the Nazi-backed Ustasa regime during World War Two.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held on Jan. 27 each year, the date in 1945 when the biggest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz in occupied Poland, was liberated by Soviet troops.

Three months ago, rightist veterans of Croatia's 1991-95 independence war raised a commemorative plaque in the town of Jasenovac to comrades killed there at the beginning of the conflict Zagreb fought to secede from Serbian-led Yugoslavia.

Included in the veterans' plaque are words from a salute used by the Ustasha regime that killed tens of thousands of prisoners including Jews, Serbs, Roma gypsies and anti-fascist Croats, in the 1941-1945 Jasenovac concentration camp.

That prompted the association representing Croatia's remnant population of Jews, numbering somewhat over 1,500, to pull out of its primary Holocaust remembrance event, which is normally conducted in the Zagreb parliament.

"We took the decision on the basis of reactions by the government, parliament and the president. The problem is not (just) a plaque in Jasenovac including the Ustasha salute, but the relativisation of everything (to do with the Holocaust)," community leader Ognjen Kraus told the state news agency Hina.

The center-right government of Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic - now on an unrelated visit to Israel - proposed last month forming a commission that would legally regulate reappearances of symbols from any past totalitarian regime.

Kraus dismissed the gesture. "If swastika or Ustasha symbols are equated with the (communist) red star, what are we talking about? Are we going to revise history? Establish a commission to tell us what World War Two was about?" he said.

Croatian society has been divided since independence over how to treat both the Nazi collaborationist and communist past of the ex-Yugoslav republic, now a European Union member state.

Some Croats believe authorities have been indifferent to sporadic resurfacings of Ustasha extremism, including the chanting of Ustasha slogans by ultra-nationalist soccer fans.

Others say post-independence governments, particularly those led by the left, have failed to appropriately condemn crimes committed during 45 years of post-war communist rule.

In April 2016, members of the Jewish community, the Serb minority and an anti-fascist group boycotted the Holocaust commemoration event at the Jasenovac camp site in protest at what they deemed the authorities' feeble reaction to incidents "revitalizing" Ustasha ideology.

Croatian Jews and Serbs have called for more thorough teaching in schools about the abuses of Ustasha rule.

Nazi hunter: Israel’s silence on Croatia’s Holocaust distortion is abdication of duty / "JTA - Jewish Telegraphic Agency" January 24, 2017

Nazi hunter: Israel’s silence on Croatia’s Holocaust distortion is abdication of duty

(JTA) — A leader of the Simon Wiesenthal Center accused Israel of “abdicating its duty” to Holocaust survivors following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to mention the genocide in a statement about Croatia.

The allegation Tuesday by Efraim Zuroff, a well-known Holocaust researcher, hunter of Nazis and head of the center’s Eastern Europe operations, came during the state visit to Israel by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and amid a conflict between his government and Croatia’s Jewish community.

Citing the Croatian government’s “failure” to address publicly the role of the pro-Nazi members of the Ustasha fascist movement in the murder of Croatian Jews during the Holocaust, the leadership of the country’s main Jewish group said it would skip a state memorial ceremony in Parliament planned for Jan. 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“The problem is that the government relativizes everything that has to do with the Holocaust,” Ognjen Kraus, president of the Coordinating Committee of the Jewish Communities of Croatia, told Reuters Monday. His organization boycotted last year’s state event for similar reasons.

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic was photographed in November holding a flag of Croatia’s fascist puppet regime during World War II. That month, World War II veterans engraved a Ustasha slogan on a commemorative plaque installed in the town of Jasenovac. Authorities ignored the Jewish community’s pleas to have the plaque removed.

Last week, a Croatian principal shut down an exhibition about the Holocaust that the Anne Frank House of Amsterdam helped put up in his high school. He told the local media that he objected to its presentation of Ustasha militiamen as killers. Zuroff on Monday wrote to the Croatian Embassy in Israel demanding the principal be fired.

Ustasha men are responsible for killing the majority of the 30,000 Croatian Jews murdered in the Holocaust, according to Yad Vashem. Only a fifth of the country’s pre-Holocaust Jewish community survived the genocide.

However, Netanyahu’s statement to the media about his meeting with Plenkovic made no direct or indirect reference to these controversies. Instead, he thanked Croatia for helping Israel fight forest fires last fall; praised Croatia – which is a member of the European Union — for supporting Israel in international forums, and called on it to continue to help Israel fight “militant Islamic terrorism.”

Zuroff said that while he appreciates Israel’s need to preserve and nurture its friendly ties to Eastern European nations, the Jewish state nonetheless “currently has enough leverage to find ways to express its concern over Holocaust revisionism and abuse of Holocaust memory without necessarily harming bilateral ties.”

He added that Israel “seems more eager to present itself to receive various compensations for Holocaust-related abuses than it is willing to stand up for the memory of the victims and assume the obligations connected with being the Jewish state.”

I, naravno, Mihailovićeva zla kob, Josip Broz Tito.

PRVI SUSRET DRAŽE I VOJVODE ĐUJIĆA
