Each of the next three years will mark the 100th anniversary of a significant historical event that should be a source of great pride for Serbian people everywhere - all of us and each of us - and each of the anniversaries should be celebrated on a grand scale.
2012 will mark 100 years since the Serbs drove the Ottoman Empire out of Serbia and the Balkans during the First Balkan War.
2013 will mark 100 years since the Serbs won a great victory over the Bulgarians in the Second Balkan War.
2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the miraculous Serbian victories over the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, an Empire ten times the size of Serbia, in the first few months of the cataclysmic First World War.
And we must not forget that only four years after that, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the pivotal Serbian breakthrough on the Salonika Front in September of 1918. This victorious breakthrough marked the beginning of the end of WWI, with the Serbs effectively shortening the war and thereby potentially saving the lives of millions of people who would have perished had the war continued into the future as planned.
To honor and celebrate these special anniversaries, to honor and remember the Serbian experience - both military and civilian - as well as to honor and celebrate the Serbian contribution to the great Allied victory in World War One, I will be publishing the book Heroes of Serbia in both the English and Serbian language. This book will tell the story of the events described above and so much more. Included will be hundreds of photos of a remarkable generation of Serbs that wrote the pages of world history like no other generation of any nation has ever written. What that generation of Serbs did is absolutely fantastic. What that generation of Serbs went through - what they endured, what they sacrificed and how they persevered - and how they contributed positively to the world events of their time is an unforgettable story that deserves to be remembered. Those contributions are especially significant today, a century later, given the course of current events.
The heroes of Serbia were real life actors in the great historical dramas of the 20th Century that we in the 21st have an opportunity and an obligation to remember, to celebrate, and to honor.
