REMEMBERING A HIGHLY DECORATED MARINE OF SERBIAN DESCENT: COLONEL MITCHELL PAIGE (PEJIC) USMC / "United States Marine Corps History Division"

Mitchell Paige was born on 31 August 1918 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1936 from McKeesport High School at McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 1 September 1936 at Baltimore, Maryland.

Completing his “boot camp” training at Parris Island, South Carolina, in November 1936, he was transferred to Quantico, Virginia. Later he served aboard the USS Wyoming as a gunner and took part in maneuvers via Panama to San Clemente Island off the coast of California.

In February 1937, he was transferred to Mare Island Navy Yard for guard duty, and two months later was ordered to Cavite in the Philippine Islands. While on Cavite he became a member of the All-Navy-Marine baseball team, which gained prominence throughout the island and the orient.

He served in China from October 1938 to September 1939. During his tour he guarded American property during the famous Tientsin flood. He left North China and returned to the U.S. in April 1940, for guard duty at the Brooklyn and Philadelphia Navy Yards. In September 1940, he rejoined the 5th Marines, at Quantico, and the following month participated in maneuvers at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Culebra, Puerto Rico.

In March 1941, he was transferred back to the States and ordered to New River, North Carolina, to help construct and prepare a new training base for Marines, which later became Camp Lejeune.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he was once more sent overseas with the 7th Marines and landed at Apia, British Samoa. From Samoa, the 7th Marines went to Guadalcanal, landing in September of 1942. He earned the nation’s highest decoration for heroism, the Medal of Honor, during the campaign for Guadalcanal in October 1942, when he made a desperate lone stand against enemy Japanese after they had broken through the lines and killed or wounded all of the Marines in his machine gun section.

Platoon Sergeant Paige fired his machine gun until it was destroyed, then moved from gun to gun, keeping up a withering fire until he finally received reinforcements. He later led a bayonet charge that drove the Japanese back and prevented a breakthrough in our lines.

While on Guadalcanal he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the field on 19 December 1942. He remained on the island until January 1943, when he went to Melbourne, Australia, with the 1st Marine Division. The Marine Corps’ World War II Commandant, Gen Alexander A. Vandegrift, presented the Medal of Honor to 2dLt Paige there in the Spring of 1943. In June 1943, he was promoted to first lieutenant.

In September 1943, 1stLt Paige left with the 1st Marine Division for New Guinea where they joined the 6th Army for the attack on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 26 December 1943.

In May 1944, the Division left Cape Gloucester for a rest area in the Russell Islands, Pavuvu. In July 1944, 1stLt Paige was sent back to the States and assigned duty at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was promoted to captain 28 February 1945.

In June 1945, Capt Paige became Tactical Training Officer at Camp Matthews, California, and the following September, was sent to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot as a recruit training officer. He was placed on inactive duty in May 1946, returning to active duty again in July 1950, and was assigned duty at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.

He was later transferred to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at San Diego, California, as Plans and Operations Officer of the 2d Recruit Training Battalion. At this time he also went on a special assignment as Plans and Training Officer in charge of setting up a PLC training program for the Special Training Company. He was promoted to the rank of major on 1 January 1951.

In October 1951, Maj Paige became Executive Officer of the 2d Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, until October 1952, when he was transferred to the 4th Special Junior Course at Marine Corps Schools, Quantico. He attended school there until May 1953, then served as Division Recruiting Officer, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, until February 1954.

Major Paige was next assigned to Sub-Unit #2, Headquarters Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division, San Francisco, California, serving as Officer in Charge, Division Noncommissioned Officers School until April 1955. During this period he also served briefly as Assistant Officer in Charge of Sub-Unit #1.

From there he served as Battalion Executive Officer and later Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, from April 1955 until August 1955 when he reported to the 12th Marine Corps Reserve and Recruitment District to serve as Officer in Charge of Marine Corps Recruiting Station in San Francisco. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in May 1957.

In August 1957, LtCol Paige was assigned duty as Inspector-Instructor, 7th Infantry Battalion, USMCR, at San Bruno, California, until August 1958, when he was detached to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C.

In May 1959, he entered the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, California, and remained there for nine months until he was ordered to the Marine Barracks, U.S. Naval Station, San Diego, California, to serve as Executive Officer until October 1959. He was placed on the Disability Retired List on 1 November 1959. For being specially commended for performance of duty in actual combat he was promoted to colonel upon retirement.

Colonel Paige died of congestive heart failure at his home in La Quinta, California, on 15 November 2003 at the age of 85. He was buried with full military honors in the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California.

A complete list of the colonel’s decorations and medals includes: the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, the China Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with Base clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Marine Corps Reserve Ribbon and the United Nations Service Medal.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, The Movement of Serbian Chetniks Ravne Gore, Hamilton Chapter observed their annual Memorial Service (Parastos) for the men and women of Dinara Division who lost their lives during and after WWII. This year’s anniversary is of special significance – the 70th year since the end of World War II.

Photo from Dinara Proslava/Parastos 2012 in Winona, Canada

Every Krajina man is a born soldier, it has been said. When I try to cast my mind to those WWII days I think that at times I felt that those Krajina men were not only brave but indestructible. The thought of fighting for their land, their people, their families made them braver still. There was no lack of courage and valor at Padjene, Golubic, Gracac, Korana and many other battlefields. Crossing the Socha River in May 1945 was the last battle they fought, and their first step into another world. New challenges followed: new country, new customs, new culture, new home, new life. Many came to Canada, some groups settling here in Hamilton area where they played a vital role in social and cultural life in this part of Ontario.

As the years and decades rolled by, as is inevitable, many of our friends passed away. Today, as has been the custom over the past years, we remember and celebrate their remarkable life.

This Commemorative Service – a ribbon of remembrances – provides a somber occasion to take stock of our losses. It can also make a fellow reflective.

Over the years we have lost many fine men and women. With the death of Vojvoda Momcilo Djujic (1907-1999), we were witnessing much more than the passing of a man. In war and peace Vojvoda attained a special place of respect among us.
Over the years, here in Hamilton area we have lost such stalwarts as Tosho Klisuric (1923-1989), Jovo Borovic (1921-2011), Mirko Milunovic (1919-2007), Jovo Djuric (1924-2003), Dusan Sevo (1919-1993), Pavle Jovanovic (1921-1996), Sava Opacic (1902-1984), Djuro Trifunovic (1925-2011), Jovo Andic (1919-2013), and many others – too many to mention here. All are missed.

I miss Tosho’s ever present smile…his heartwarming story of his epic 3,000 km. train ride from Halifax in Nova Scotia… through the endless forests of New Brunswick… the rolling countryside of Quebec… the fields of golden wheat spread along the shores of Lake Ontari, to his final destination – the primal forests of Northern Ontario. And there, a voice of welcome, a man running up and down the station platform shouting: “Any Serbs, any Serbs here?” Tosho’s work life led him to Hamilton where his calm demeanour and steady hand led us through many years and many obstacles. He derived much pleasure helping our youngsters, his ‘extended family’ as he called them. Nearest and equal to him in significance was Jovo Borovic, our church president in its difficult formative years. His drive and can-do attitude was infectious. Indeed, Jovo left us a legacy of leadership.

I particularly remember Mirko, Pajo, Jovo, Pero and an army of others proving their carpentry and masonry skills, or lack of them, in building our Winona Cultural Centre.

I remember Dusan Sevo, a true wartime hero and divisional flag bearer. That flag, wrapped around his waist, made it all the way from Dinara to Winona. And that same flag was draped around his casket as it did for every Chetnik member that passed on to eternity.

I smile in appreciation when I think of Sevo’s truly heroic exploits during the war, and his culinary exploits at his home in Stoney Creek. Nobody, not even his wife Ruza could match the taste of his strudels and his gibanicas. That man was a marvel.

I wince every time I think of Dragan’s first encounter with a Canadian skunk. Early one morning on his way to work Dragan stopped to pet this strange looking dog with a white stripe down its back. Well…the results were not pleasant. That day our Dragan never turned up for his shift work at STELCO.

Many of our men worked at STELCO and DOFASCO, the steel mills of Hamilton. For some this was a mere stepping-stone to starting their own businesses; still others taking on farming. Coincidentally, this being the fruit belt area, several of our men owned and operated fruit farms – grapes, peaches, apricots, pears, apples, etc. Dusan Vincic (1923-2011), the Dalmatian born farmer and father of four operated his fruit farm near Beamsville. Dusan had the patience of Job, and an instinct for correctness that rarely failed him.

A dozen or so kilometers south of Beamsville, on Highway 20, Djuro Trifunovic operated his poultry farm, raising turkeys. Djuro ships his fattened turkeys to market, then he buys young chicks to raise during the next season.

The energetic Todor Trifunovic (1925-2015) operated his labour-intensive tobacco farm in Burford area. Never underestimate the determination of a Serb, I heard him say with a measure of pride.

Less than an hour away at a place called Valence near Puslinich, on highway 97, you will find the spread of Sava Opacic – his choice was raising crops and livestock. Sava’s farm is a place of peace and quiet beauty, a place where the sky feels so big and blue, the air so fresh, although that might only have been because Hamilton’s air is badly polluted by steel mills spewing smoke and grit into the air.

Yes, the pleasures of the outdoors fit closely with a way long enjoyed by Sava and others back in the Old Country. But in farming, the difficulties and pleasures often share the same bed.

These men – tough and tempered by life – are experts at survival.

Drawing on their experiences some have published books or left unpublished manuscripts  – most now kept at our Winona library – describing the life ‘that happened somewhere long ago and far away’.

Farmers or steel workers, all these men have elevated themselves to a higher spiritual status through performing many charitable deeds. People of Krajina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, people of Kosovo and Serbia, the refugees, the orphaned children, the widowed mothers – they all have experienced the abiding generosity of these good people. Staying true to yourself, to the core of who you are and what your values are is certainly exemplified by Djuro and Ilinka Trifunovic. This childless couple left one million dollars for the orphaned children in Serbia. Like so many others, Dragan-the-pensioner sent his ‘modest’ donation. I remember how happy he was when notified that his donation of five thousand dollars had safely reached the Serbian orphanage in Bosnia.

All these people are gone from us now. In and around the Hamilton’s cemeteries you’ll find their graves and their tombstones. There are proud names upon them.  As time and events test our resolve, the mirror of memory of these good people will hearten and inspire us in our own future endeavours.

Poruke Kragujevčana pred streljanje, Foto: Muzej 21. oktobar

Poruke Kragujevčana pred streljanje, Foto: Muzej 21. oktobar

"Zbogom, Mico. Ja danas pogiboh. Zbogom, srce.

Poruke Kragujevčana pred streljanje, Foto: Muzej 21. oktobar

"Miro, poljubi decu umesto mene.

HALYARD MISSION 71st anniversary celebrated in Pranjani, Serbia on September 25, 2015!

Aleksandra's Note: So pleased to see that the historic Halyard Mission Rescue Operation that took place on enemy occupied territory in WWII Yugoslavia in 1944 is being officially recognized and celebrated in Serbia! This is important, because for far too long, the rescue of over 500 American Airmen and additional Allied Airmen by the Chetnik Forces of General Draza Mihailovich was not only kept classified, it was treated as though it never happened, due to communist control of the homeland and "political" considerations here in America.

Many thanks to Lt. Col. John Cappello, president of The Halyard Mission Foundation, for the text and photos describing the celebration that took place in September 2015 to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the Halyard Mission Rescue Operation. This event, which promises to be an annual commemoration, is important, too, in facilitating reconciliation between Serbs and Americans.

Sincerely,
Aleksandra Rebic

HALYARD MISSION 71st anniversary celebrated in Pranjani, Serbia on September 25, 2015!

By Lt. Col. John Cappello, president of
The Halyard Mission Foundation:

On Friday, September 25th, the 71st anniversary of the Halyard Mission was celebrated in Pranjani, Serbia, the location of the rescue of over 500 American Airmen during the Second World War.  The Halyard Mission Foundation would like to thank the U.S. Embassy for sponsoring this year's event.

The event started with a wreath laying ceremony on Galovica Field, the site of the runway built for the rescue mission.  Representatives from the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), the U.S. Embassy, the Serbian Ministry of Defense, the Municipality of Gorni Milanovac, and the Halyard Mission Foundation laid wreaths at the monument on the field.  Brigadier General Mark D. Camerer, the Director of Plans, Programs and Analyses for Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, made remarks following the wreath laying.  Additionally, the Mayor of Gorni Milanovac, Mr. Milisav Mirković, and Dr. Oliver Antic, representing the President of Serbia's Office, both addressed the crowd at Galovica Field. Other special guests included Ms. Laura Gross, Principal Director for Political Affairs of Russia, Ukraine and Eurasian Affairs, U.S. Department of Defense; Brigadier General Dusko Žarković, Deputy Commander, Serbian Air Forces; John Cappello, Lieutenant Colonel retired and president of the Halyard Mission Foundation; Colonel Taft Blackburn, Defense Attaché, U.S. Embassy, Belgrade; and Gordon Deguit, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Belgrade.

Following the wreath laying ceremony the party proceeded to Pranjani's church for a short memorial service led by the community priest, V. Rev. Vojislav Risimovic.  Afterward the group was treated to a screening of a documentary dedicated to the life of George Vujnovich.  The movie was viewed at Pranjani's Ivo Andric Middle School, a fitting location for the visitors to experience the telling of an important piece of the community's history.  The documentary, produced by EuroAtlantic Initiative, was written by Halyard Mission Foundation members Daniel Sunter and Bojan Dragicevic and directed by Dejan Zivkovic.  The forty-five minute film told the story of George Vujnovich... Vujnovich, who passed away in 2012, helped plan and execute the Halyard Mission.  His story is intertwined with those of George Musulin, Nick Lalich, Arthur Jibilian, and the others that participated in the rescue of allied airmen from Serbia.  Their collective daring and heroism is told through the eyes of George Vujnovich and the stories he tells of this amazing mission.

After viewing of the special documentary the group was treated to delicious lunch of traditional Serb specialties at the Jevtovich Ranch in Leusici, a short drive from Pranjani.

Again, a special thanks to the Defense Attaché Office (DAO) of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.  The event could not have happened without the support and tremendous efforts of Colonel Taft Blackburn, Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché; Major Todd Andrewsen, Air Force Attaché; Master Sergeant Andre Shand, Operations NCO; and Ms. Mila Antonic, Administrative Assistant, Defense Attaché Office.

2015. / "Politika" October 9, 2015

Politika
