AMERICAN VETERAN GRATEFUL TO PRANJANI

Report for Radio-Television Serbia
by Silvia Pashaylich
November 1, 2010

USAF Lt. Col. Milton Friend, one of 500 rescued American aviators in Pranjani in WWII, came to Serbia to testify on behalf of the rehabilitation of Draza Mihailovich.

American Milton Friend will never forget the village of Pranjani. It was there that one of the largest rescue missions that saved Allied airmen during WWII took place.

The Lt. Colonel of the USAF is in Serbia for the purpose of testifying in the name of himself and his colleagues on behalf of the rehabilitation of Draza Mihailovich, under whose command was executed mission “Halyard”.

66 years have passed since Milton Friend was in the Serbian village. He recalls the sacrifice of the Ravna Gora Movement members and the unselfish hospitality of the locals who hid, fed and tended to the aviators.

I always feel grateful for all they did for me and the other American patriots. All 500 of the other aviators would say the same if they were now here,” emphasized Friend.

In almost every household of Pranjani they remember the rescue of the aviators. Predrag Milosavljevic was 10 years old then.

"It was, it seems to me, a full sky, everything white, like geese, and they are getting closer and closer to the land. When the pilots started to fall, all the people, the whole village, started to run toward the parachutes,” said Milosavljevic.

This American aviator came to Serbia to participate as a witness in the legal process of the rehabilitation of Draza Mihailovich.

I proudly say, I know Draza Mihailovich and there is no chance, and I say this from my heart, that he committed any of the crimes he was charged for”, emphasized Friend.

Mission “Halyard”, in 1944, is one of the largest rescue operations of American bomber crews in WWII.  From an improvised airstrip in Pranjani, more than 500 aviators were evacuated.
